How to Play Acoustic Guitar
By: Carl Williams, Current Not yet Rated

Hi There,

Now that is a very good question, how to play acoustic guitar, mmmm. Well I have found that playing acoustic guitar is easy and I suppose that the reason for this is because when I first learnt to play guitar it was on an acoustic and then I went onto electric.

I believe that how to play your acoustic guitar is in a very broad sense the same as playing any guitar at all.

The reason I believe this is because you still play chords, chords like A, G, D etc BUT there are differences you do need to know about.

I will tell you about some of them.....

The Sound Quality of Acoustic Guitar

Your acoustic guitar can produce a great sound quality which will become apparent when you start to learn to play and when you start getting good on your guitar you will be able to start playing harmonics and fingering.

There are a lot of different techniques and things that you can do while playing your guitar and you will find that you can greatly reduce the sound by playing by strumming lightly and even palming the strings of your guitar.

Likewise if you strum your guitar harder you will get a louder sound, common sense I know…...hang on I am not explaining this clearly.

Have ever herd Cat Stevens play guitar?

Well then you will know what I mean,Cat Stevens really got into his guitar and if you pay attention to some of the techniques that he used then you will start to be getting an idea of what I mean. If you have not herd Cat Stevens then I recomend you take 10 to listen to him.

Any way an acoustic guitar can produce a deep mellow full bodied sound that can be gentle or hard to the ear. It really depends on how you play your acoustic guitar as to the sound that you create.

To put it another way if you go get your acoustic guitar now you will hear what I mean because a lot of the fundamentals of how to play your acoustic guitar are exactly the same as if you are playing an electric guitar.

Really it is more the playing style you will need to change or adopt.

You can achieve a magic sound on your acoustic guitar by doing some different things.

Things like finger picking, trying different strumming styles and even the amount of pressure you apply to the strings on the fret board.

Speaking of the amount of pressure on the strings and the fret board you will notice that some acoustic guitars have a small gap between the strings and the fret board and other acoustic guitars have a big gap between the strings and the fret board.

This is quite a significat thing to notice because it affects the quality of the sound or what I should say is that you will need to use more pressure when forming chords on your guitar if it has a big gap between the strings and fret board.

Your fingers will have to strengthen more as well so that you can hold a chord on a guitar with a big gap between the strings and fret board.

If you experiment and play on your acoustic guitar then you too will get the same amount of enjoyment that I have when I play on my acoustic guitar.

You will find that when you experiment and play your acoustic guitar you will create your own style and sound and this in turn will be a reflection of the music that you have herd and listend to that will have influenced you.

When you are having fun experimenting and playing your guitar you will find that depending on what type of acoustic guitar you have you may or may not be able to get to the high frets when you want to play and do fancy finger work.

(This is not really too much of an issue but it will depend on your style and the way you play your acoustic guitar).

If we look at Jack Johnson and the style he has we will notice that he likes to palm the strings as well as pluck and use a really neat finger style to create his own unique style of music that most people like.

What I am trying to show you is that learning how to play acoustic guitar is all about having fun and enjoying your self as well as experimenting with chords and styles of playing.

As you learn to play your acoustic guitar have fun and enjoy experimenting.

Kind Regards,
Carl
