By: Ben Needles, Current Not yet Rated

The focus of child safety should always be at the fore front of a parents mind. This article will focus on baby car seats, their safety and the right things you need to do. In the recent years many young children have been hurt, or injured, or killed due to not using the proper child automobile restraint. Legislation has been passed to try to help ensure that children are safe in cars today. The following is some good information on baby car seat safety.

The first point sounds like common sense, but there are many people that do it. You should not carry a child in your arms while in the car. Especially a car thats moving. In an effort to minimize this risk, many hospitals are instructed not to allow a person to leave the hospital if proper child safety restraint is not in the vehicle.

The nice thing is, not only are car seats being made safer today, they are also being made more comfortable. Newborn child safety car seats are specifically designed with the infant in mind. Many car seats now are made with good ergonomic design, and the design fits the baby better than ever. There are many features you can find in a baby car seat, you can find the perfect one for your child. Baby car seats are also more affordable then ever. With so many styles and price ranges to choose from, there really is no excuse not to have the proper child safety car seat.

Child car seats come in some basic configurations, and continual innovation makes them better and better. Because of the continual innovation, it is recommended that you purchase a newer model than taking one that may be a few years old as a pass down from friends or family. Baby car seats from a few years ago may not be as safely designed as a model that is made within a year or so. Here are the 3 basic car seat configurations.

Infant car seats - only face the rear; usually used in the back seat; may be used as an infant carrier and may be attachable to a stroller.

Convertible car seats - Used in the rear; when your child gets older may change into a forward-facing car seat or even a booster seat.

Booster seats - the last step before your child can wear a regular seat belt; used with the cars seatbelt.

For many, the convertible car seat is a great option, as it allows you to switch the position as the child gets older.

When it comes time to install the baby car seat, it is important that you follow the manufacturers instructions about how to attach the car seat. It is also very important to register the car seat, too. You always want to send in the car seats registration form, so you are notified if the manufacturer recalls the seat for any defect. The worst thing that could happen is you have a problem and you had no idea.

When putting your child into the seat, if the child is wearing a heavy clothing, make certain that the harness straps are tight. Sometimes the clothes can be deceiving and when you think you may have your child secure, they may not be. It may not be a bad idea to remove any heavy clothing when putting the child in the seat. Some safety agencies recommend this.

During the ages between 0 - 5 always have your child in the appropriate car seat. Everywhere there are now laws regarding children riding in safe car seats. They are so serious about this that you can be issued a ticket along with a pretty large fine if you are stopped for not having your child safely in his or her car seat.

Here are some common car seat mistakes that new parents make.

Placing child in wrong size car seat for his weight/size. Make sure you consult your manufactuers recommendation. Placing a rear-facing car seat in the front seat of the car: children in general should always be in the back due to the air bag, and force in an accident. Not tightening harness correctly; Positioning the harness chest clip incorrectly: it should be centered nicely. Not using the latch correctly, make sure the latch is completely closed.

Lastly, if you are in an accident, and it is questionable as to the condition of the baby car seat, please get rid of it! Depending on the force of the accident, the structure of the car seat may be compromised. Dont hesitate to get a new one. Remember, this a safety piece of equipment, not a fashion piece. The reason for the seat is to keep your child safe. If it wont do that, then whats the use.
